At noon, Eve notes noon in her timekeeping notebook, followed by “Lunch appointment,” and gathers her things. In the hall, she passes a cluster of buckets catching rainwater. Her blouse sticks to her back. Her stockings are sweating.

Desiree the Destroyer grips her opponents by the ponytail and mops the mat with their faces. She shaves her head so her opponents won’t have anything to hold onto.

Eve clutches the rape whistle on her keychain as she enters the parking garage. She wonders if the lot attendants will think she is sneaking out early, or that she is so privileged she can come and go as she pleases. “No! I’m just like you,” she wants to assure them. Except she is not. She works in an air-conditioned office, while they sit in a box all day getting rained on every time they slide back the ticket window.
